Relic – The 13th Floor - 3.5 Beards
As a fan of Relics last project I was really anticipating the release of this album. Unable to get my hands on a pressed copy, I checked out the digital copy. I enjoyed the clean black and white design with the 13th in red. I am always eager to get my hands on a project that includes who I consider to be Canada's J Dilla, Fresh Kils. As I looked more into the project I was surprised to see not only no features on the album but Rel McCoy is responsible for the entire project, writing, recording, mixing and mastering. I knew from his previous albums and beat tapes that he creates much of his albums, it is good to see the confidence from an artist to fully create a feature free project. Favorite tracks for me would be “The 13th”, “Breathe Easy”, and the single “Isn't It Something.” A low point for the album as a whole that has one artist and one feature is that listening to the entire album, the tracks can have a similar type feel. This is a great chill album that I would recommend any true hip hop head add to their collection. Mine will be staying in rotation in my studio for some time.
As time goes on I enjoy Relics work more and more, and Fresh Kils, well anything he touches turns to gold. A good grouping, and definitely worth getting.
